08/21/00 Rock and Roll
Our crew decided that for optimal fun we should tap into our prepubescent selves and roll the night away. With ages spanning from mid 20s to mid 30s our memories of rink life werent exactly the same. To me, the Johnstown Skate and Swim was all about my blonde stepsister making out with hoods in dimly lit corners. Occasionally shed get into fights with other girls whom she referred to as skanks or hos, but I heard those names thrown around a lot in her direction too. With REO Speedwagon and Airsupply pouring from the speakers I cowered next to Ms Pacman, slowly remaking myself into a Pacman Professional. The hoods scared me, my stepsister scared me. I still love Ms Pacman.

In 2000 San Francisco there arent many hoods around, just homos. Homos are scary too, but it's a different terror alltogether. There werent any hoods or homos around (that I know about) the Wednesday we went to the rink, just lots of sassy girls. Of course Candy was in line to show everyone a thing or two about roller dancing. The girl has some moves and some skills. Candy can also do the worm and I can do the running man. Like Sigfried and Roy, were a team effort to reckon with.

While the bad kids smoked cigarettes in the parking lot I made nice with the DJ so hed let me request some songs before the hokey pokey. I was thrilled to see the entire self-titled Alicia Bridges record on the play list. Because my Alicia crew (and you know who you are) wasn't around I withheld from requesting High Altitudes as tempting as it was. I settled with some Pat Benetar and Samantha Fax. Noticing my keen eye for good music Mr DJ pointed me in the direction of a dot matrix flyer which read NOW HIRING ROLLER RINK DJ. You can imagine the chills that ran through me. I could be the San Mateo Rollerdum DJ…Alas, I have to move away to teach kids swear words in English. Eastern Europe is a few decades behind the rest of the world. Maybe roller skating has just reached its prime there, maybe theyre still playing Air Supply.
